Imagine earning real benefits for yourself and your community as you spend time outdoors and improve your own health. Civic Dollars is a community currency and mobile app that rewards people for spending time outdoors in parks and public spaces, encouraging healthier lifestyles and community engagement.

Developing Healthy Communities is bringing Civic Dollars to the Derry and Strabane district council area. We will work with local community groups as well as businesses to offer residents living with pre-diabetes the opportunity to earn rewards simply by spending time outdoors in parks and green spaces.

The project is funded by Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), is the UK’s innovation agency. It works to create a better future by inspiring, involving and investing in businesses developing life-changing innovations.

How does it work?

Users earn Civic Dollars for every 30 minutes spent in designated earn zones, which can then be exchanged for rewards from local businesses or donated to local charities.

The programme is free to join for people living with pre-diabetes in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area. It is designed to support people who are pre-diabetic, encouraging regular movement and healthier lifestyle choices through small, achievable steps.

Users can spend their Civic Dollars on rewards from local businesses within the Derry City and Strabane District Council area or use them to access extra rewards like diet and exercise courses at the Old Library Trust Healthy Living Centre and other participating organisations across the Council area.

Alternatively they can choose to donate their Civic Dollars to support local charities, community groups, schools or sports clubs. It’s a fun, easy way to get healthier, enjoy the outdoors, and give back to your community.

The Civic Dollars app is available for android and iOS.
