It's World Health Day!
This year the event, celebrated on 7 April 2025, marks the start of a full year campaign on maternal and newborn health from the World Health Organization. The Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures campaign will focus on preventable maternal and newborn deaths, and urge governments and health bodies to prioritize women’s longer-term health and well-being.
The campaign calls for critical investment in maternal health, citing high impact actions such as antenatal checks, special attention for vulnerable babies and access to family planning.
"Women everywhere need access to health providers who listen to their concerns and meet their needs – including in the months after pregnancy when millions lack critical support, despite enduring lasting health consequences after birth," says the World Health Organization.
The campaign also stresses the importance of family-friendly policies such as paid maternity leave, legal protections, and workplace support for breastfeeding in supporting women's health.
